Ketsana hit Cambodia

One of the most destructive storms in years extended its deadly path across Southeast Asia, blowing down wooden villages in Cambodia and crushing Vietnamese houses under mudslides after submerging much of the Philippines capital.

The death toll Wednesday was at 298 and rising.

Quotes

-A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both!
-The colossal misunderstanding of our time is the assumption that insight will work with people who are unmotivated to change. Communication does not depend on syntax, eloquence, or rhetoric, or articulation but on the emotional context in which the message is heard. People can only hear you when they are moving toward you, and they are not likely to when your words are pursuing them. Even the choices of words lose their power when they are used to overpower. Attitudes are the real figures of speech.
-Angels can fly because they take themselves lightly; devils fall because of their gravity.

Dream

Last night I dreamed of my SSEAYP friends, especially my SG-B mates. I saw many of you. I had been dreaming of you guys a few times lately. I guess it is because it is September. Miss you guys.

I remember in my dream I was feeling proud of how many true friends I have all over this world, from Thailand to Indonesia, from Japan to Jamaica, from Afghanistan to Romania, from Argentina to Singapore.

SUMO questions

"Where do life's opportunities lie? Inside or outside of your comfort zone?"
Is there an area of your life where you're always the spectator and never the player?
If there was something where you felt it's time to be a player and not a spectator, at work or in your personal life, what would it be?

--- I had chosen to be a spectator in almost everything. It made me miss alot of things and wasn't good at handling things, relationships with others, etc. I'd rather sit and watch people be content and happy and would give up what's in my hands because I didn't know how to keep them while I am more comfortable seeing others have them and be happy. It was only again and again that I lost or gave up what's important, what I really like/need/want, that I realize I should start thinking about myself and be a player in my own life at times and try to protect and keep what I should.

Cambodia has to cope with its global connection

From Yale Global Online:

Once the poster child for the benefits of globalization, Cambodia is now being asked to cope with its darker side in the aftermath of the financial crisis. The four pillars of the country’s economy – tourism, garment-making, construction, and agriculture – are feeling the global pinch in their various ways, writes journalist Anne-Laure Porée. Tourism is down thanks to the global stay-at-home vacation trend. Garment-making has collapsed due to lower US demand and choosey shoppers. Construction, like the rest of the world, plummeted with knock-on effects in consumer banking as rising unemployment led to greater personal loan defaults. Even agriculture, which could still provide positive growth in 2009, faces the uncertainty of weather and the challenges of foreign investment choking off local farmers. Perhaps the only ray of light is the natural resource industry – a sector that has long promised to provide limited value-added components to the economy. The sad part of this story is that the government seems content to wait for a rebound in the global economy, hoping the rising tide abroad will lift Cambodia’s boat. But as Porée notes, to integrate fully into the world economy, Cambodia has to learn how to be more than a supplier of garments based on cheap labor. – YaleGlobal

Dr. Haing S. Ngor

Click to read a feature on the late famous Killing Fields actor, who was my dad's very best friend.

Fun, fun

Nothing's much greater than the love and care of and time shared with real family and relatives. We spent almost the entire day together at my house today.
Yummy
Movie-time
Playing cards (see my knees?)
Mum and my sis Nina in the kitchen
Ah baby
My beloved cutie nephew and his mum

"up to the neck"

Now that her evils have spread, I must reveal the pretentious and destructive big mouth witch-bitch. Here’s what had happened through the sms:

A: I am asking your favor in telling the whoever who had talked bad about me that he/she was wrong. (and the message went on a bit just justifying that I had chosen the life I chose because I want to and that I have many choices in life but I choose it this way – I don’t rush into marriage cos age doesn’t matter and I don’t think I’m old).

Witch: What’s wrong with you? No one ever talks about you! You’re just crazy. I don’t care about your crazy problem.

A: Yes, my problem is crazy. It was not even a problem until someone made it a problem.

Witch: Watch and think before you open your stupid mouth. I don’t care.

A: I know you never cared and I thank you for that.

Then, a few days later, I got cusses and insults and yells from the dad of the witch, saying that his daughter had told him that I had cussed him and that he didn’t say it. WAIT A MINUTE:

1. If he hadn’t said it, then how did they know I was referring to him? I was only referring to the person who had said it as “whoever” and I really meant it – whoever.
2. If I remember correctly and my English doesn’t betray me, it was the witch who had cussed me and I didn’t cuss anyone. Or does she really speak or understand English? That gave me a doubt.
3. Suddenly the witch was being rude to my parents. What did that have got to do with what had happened between me and her and the person who had insulted me? I mean, I wasn’t talking to her dad for a reason, wasn’t I? But what reason did she have? And what is special is that they don’t and wouldn’t ever label her as rude; they have labeled me and blamed me for being rude. Yeah right! Come to think of it, you expect me to “respect” you and think you have all the superior authority and power, just in the name of “aunty”? But, watch it. You’re younger than me. And since I have cut off any so-called blood relations I have with you, that only destine you as someone younger than me. So, look yourself in the mirror and watch it!

Anyways, since then, I’ve tried to stay away and avoid confrontations or anything to do with the witch, hoping to find peace and thinking that this is the most peaceful tactic. But, no. You run, they chase, to make sure your life is inferior to theirs.

Now another event happened. But to make it short, history repeated itself, although this times she makes sure it falls on another person, my cousin.

Someone did say something (again destructive and inconsiderate) and this time even I heard it directly, through that darn phone call he made.

When being called and asked, (of course, the caller thinking and misunderstanding that somehow the witch would have cared), the witch just simply said: I don’t care and hung up. That was the end of that conversation. But! Suddenly there were fires being thrown from them (from different people in their house), saying that the person who had called the witch had insulted them bla bla. I mean, really, what the *beep is this?

To sum up, witch, you’re a bitch, the worst one there is as I just can’t words to describe you. I can’t stand keeping it quiet anymore. Since you have repeated your own actions and try and spread the infection you’ve got in your brain, you have hit the last nail and I’ve decided a shout-out would do you best. And your exaggeration of others’ words just really shows how witchy bitchy and ignorant you are. I mean, are you gonna live your life breaking people up? Or are you planning to do that for the rest of your life? If so, I sincerely hope you can find a way to not break even yourself. Applauds to you, really, for your efforts in trying to build internal strength and peace by destroying others. Or wait, am I being easy on you again? I should just say: I wish you burn in hell!

One more thing, I think you should go back and start from first grade to learn basic maths as what goes on in your brain of how much we received from your side just doesn’t make sense. Learn the calculation since the day-dreams-you-claim-true of yours just wouldn’t add up to reality, practically, empirically, or anything that’s is REAL.

I pity you for you can’t keep internal peace and good relationships among yourselves and so you have to find a way to destroy others so that you have something to get along about. Well, y’all keep asking me: so what? What are you gonna do to us? What can you do? My reply: nothing, I don’t want to do anything or have anything to do with you. And I really mean it. NOTHING! Get it? Because, the best thing I’ve been so glad and relieved about was cutting you off of my life. I don’t have to stand your exploitation of family anymore. And, PLEASE get the *beep off of my tail.

Jia Tellas traditional Cambodian specialties spice up Scotts Valley dining

A one-of-a-kind find, Jia Tellas in Scotts Valley offers fresh, aromatic Cambodian food and lightning-fast service every day of the week.

The cuisine of tropical Cambodia, influenced by those of India and China, takes advantage of freshwater fish from its vast network of rivers, as well as indigenous ingredients including lemongrass, kaffir lime, and the pungent rhizome galangal. Sweet, sour, salty and bitter essences typically play together at mealtime.

During a recent lunch hour, I scanned the colorful menu while waiting in line to order. I then took a seat under an orange umbrella on the spacious patio. A pint glass of icy Cambodian Coffee ($2.95) arrived pronto. The strong, dark, bitter flavor was softened with a spoonful of thick, sweetened condensed milk.

Lunch soon arrived. Skewered and grilled Beef Shish Kabob ($3.25) was bathed in a sweet marinade of paprika, lemongrass and kaffir. The thinly sliced tender meat carried a blackened, smoky flavor. A chunky mélange of red chili flesh and seeds, suspended in salty red syrup added just the right bite.

A Fresh Spring Roll ($2.25) was wrapped in an elastic sheet of softened rice paper. The plump bundle included thin noodles, cucumber, crisp bean sprouts, circles of pink shrimp, and basil with its licorice undertones. In its thin, sweet, and vinegary dipping sauce, floated chopped peanuts and a single, tiny, shiny red chili with a delightfully incendiary punch.

The pièce de résistance was the traditional Amok ($9.95); its banana leaf-wrapped package resembling a neatly filled lunch bag, secured at the top with a toothpick. Peeling back the thick, dark foliage, exposed layers of catfish, over which had been poured beaten egg. Steam inside had gelled the egg into a savory pumpkin-colored custard in between and around the moist fish fillets. The flavor of curry paste ingredients including lemongrass and thin slivers of kaffir leaves permeated the soufflé-like masterpiece. Alongside the fish was a bowl of coconut milk with rings of green scallions, as thick and creamy as yogurt, but not a bit sour.

If you happen to overindulge on chili sauce, select from ten palate-cleansing flavors of gelato on your way back to work.
